The Kika Troupe is about family (it's name alone means Clan), and they all live together in a house in Bweyogere just outside Kampala in Uganda. For all the members, this is the first time that they are living in an environment where they are supported and cared for by others.
Uganda’s many years of war, and now the HIV/AIDS epidemic, has resulted in an increase of orphans. This group of children is today found on streets or work as household laborers where quite often they are financially exploited or physically and sexually abused. The African extended family system that guaranteed the survival of orphans is unfortunately changing to small nuclear families owing to financial pressures. As a result there are now more children growing without proper family values, but more exposure to violence and immortality.
It is due to the need to address the above aspirations that a group of youth formed the Kika Troupe in 2004. Kika Troupe was created by disadvantaged youths with artistic talents, who wanted to work as independent artists outside a context of exploitation. Through their work with culture and music they are financing school-fees and living for the members of the troupe.
